Unit Learning Outcomes
LO1 Illustrate the role and purpose of production engineering and its relationship with the other elements of a manufacturing system
LO2 Describe the most appropriate production processes and associated facility arrangements for manufacturing products of different material types
LO3 Analyse how a production system can incorporate a number of different production processes for a given product or assembly
LO4 Explore the effectiveness of a production system in terms of its operation within the wider manufacturing system.
Vocational Scenario
You are currently employed as a lead operator in a busy manufacturing company that produces a wide range of engineered components from ceramic, composite, and polymer materials. With several years of hands-on experience on the shop floor, you are now looking to move into a junior production engineering role.
To support your progression, your manager has asked you to create a technical report to deliver to the engineering team. The aim is to demonstrate your understanding of modern manufacturing systems and the role of production engineering within them.
You will need to demonstrate how production engineers contribute to improving operational efficiency, reducing costs, and selecting the most appropriate production processes and facility layouts for different material types.
This report will form part of your development plan and help assess your readiness for greater responsibility within the production team.
Assignment Activity and Guidance
The report should demonstrate a clear understanding of how production engineering integrates with other elements of manufacturing and how it contributes to achieving both operational and financial objectives.
You will be expected to discuss the most suitable production processes and facility arrangements for manufacturing products made from various material types, taking into account the properties and applications of metals, ceramics, composites, and polymers.
In your report, you should begin by introducing the structure and key components of a modern manufacturing system, highlighting how these elements work together to enable efficient production.
You should then explain the role of the production engineer, focusing on how they contribute to system optimisation and cost-effectiveness, as well as analysing how production engineers contribute to the development of operational strategies that align with both operational and financial goals – also assessing how production engineers may influence the design process and refinement of products that contribute further to cost effectiveness.
Next, you should describe how different material types influence the choice of manufacturing process and facility layout – ensuring to cover the following:
For each of the below you should give at least one example of a specific material/component that undergoes each process, alongside a description of its properties and applications.
a) Examine the general properties and applications of ceramics, with further investigation into components produced using sintering, hot pressing, chemical vapour deposition, and reaction bonding, highlighting their uses and performance benefits.
b) Describe the general properties and applications of composites, with further investigation into components produced using manual and automated layup, filament winding, pultrusion, and resin transfer moulding, highlighting their uses and performance benefits.
You should also address the advantages and disadvantages of polymer manufacturing techniques, particularly how they affect design decisions and process selection.
To conclude, evaluate how bonding and jointing methods – such as, but not limited to, welding, fastening, or adhesive techniques – impact product design, process efficiency, and overall production strategy.
