Assignment title
1. Alternative power sources for transport vehicles and the benefits of reducing transport vehicle use
Vocational Scenario or Context
You are a junior transport engineer, and your supervisor has asked you to research and then produce a presentation on potential alternative power sources to petroleum-based fuels for transport vehicles and the benefits of reducing transport vehicle use in [a specific town/city*]. Your supervisor wants you to do this as part of a much larger project focused on drastically reducing the environmental impact of transport vehicles in [a specific town/city*].

Task 1
You are going to evaluate alternative power sources to petroleum-based fuels for transport vehicles and the benefits of reducing transport vehicle use.
To do this:
Your tutor will ask you to focus on a specific geographical location e.g. a town or city. You need to:
- Research alternative power sources to petroleum-based fuels for transport vehicles (at least three, such as biogas, hydrogen fuel cell and battery), focusing on their economic, environmental and social sustainability; and
- Research the economic, environmental and social benefits of reducing transport vehicle at the location you have been asked to focus on.
You then need to:
Produce a presentation (with detailed notes) that evaluates alternative power sources to petroleum-based fuels for transport vehicles and the benefits of reducing transport vehicle use at the location you’ve been asked to focus on.
Your presentation and detailed notes, for a specific location, should include:
- Evaluative information on the advantages and disadvantages of each alternative power source (at least three).
- A justified conclusion for the most appropriate alternative power source at the location, which must be based on the explicit use of sustainability assessment tools (such as an environmental audit, sustainability indicators etc) and other suitable sources of information.
- Evaluative information on the economic, environmental and social benefits of reducing the use of transport vehicles at the location; and
A justified conclusion that identifies the most important actions that are likely to produce the biggest benefits at the location in terms of sustainability – all three wider benefits (economic, environmental and social) must be covered and relevant examples given.
Checklist of evidence required
An individually prepared presentation with detailed notes on alternative power sources to petroleum-based fuels for transport vehicles and on the benefits of reducing the use of transport vehicles in a given location, for example a small town.
