Vocational Scenario or Context

You have been employed as an apprentice construction engineer in a local office of a consultancy firm. The team you are working with provide clear project objectives and create an effective communication structure for the clients to ensure a co-ordinated approach to successful project delivery.

As part of your training your mentor has asked you to produce an illustrated technical report that includes the following:

a) A description of the roles and responsibilities of at least 6 No. key personnel required for the successful performance a of project management team.

b)  An appraisal of the roles and responsibilities of the 6 No. key personnel you have listed in a) above.

c)  An examination of the methods and techniques used to manage the principal resources that will be used throughout the duration of the project.

d)  A recommendation for which you think to be the most appropriate method to monitor project progress.

Task 1

Research the different roles and responsibilities of the individual project management team and relate these to the four stages of a construction project. (Pre-construction, site preparation, construction and handover).

Consideration should be given to the following:

  • How the different key team members interact.
  • The respective responsibilities of key personnel under current CDM legislation.

Task 2

Write an appraisal of the different roles and responsibilities of the individuals identified above relating them to the four stages of a construction project.

Task 3

Research the techniques used to manage the principal resources labour, plant and equipment and materials. Research the methods used to monitor quality and methods of communication within a construction project.

Consideration should be given to the following:

  • Labour requirements/plant requirements/ordering and delivery of materials
  • Workforce supervision/leadership and motivation/cashflow
  • Quality assurance and project communication.

Task 4

From the activity list given, produce a programme of activities, with graphical representations and detailed timings that show the critical and non-critical elements from the list of activities given.

You are required to identify and recommend in your report which you think to be the most appropriate method to monitor progress. Consideration should be given to the following:

  • Critical Path Networks
  • Gantt Charts
  • Line of Balance method – to produce a graphical representation use 3 groups: A-D, E-H and I-K.

  • Introduction
  • The four main sections
  • A conclusion
  • A reference page
  • A bibliography (a reference list of any material you read to assist the completion of your report)
  • If required an appendix page

The word count is a minimum of 1000 and maximum of 3000.  This is only inclusive of your Introduction, the four main sections and the conclusion.
