BTEC basics

Need the BTEC basics explained?

01What is a BTEC qualification?
A BTEC is a career-focused qualification awarded by Pearson. Instead of being judged mainly on end-of-course exams, you complete units of coursework (assignments) set against Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria, plus some externally assessed units at Level 3 and above.
02What BTEC levels are there?
BTECs run from Level 1/2 Tech Awards taken at school, through Level 3 Nationals (A-level standard), to Higher Nationals: the HNC at Level 4 and the HND at Level 5. Pearson BTEC Professional qualifications go up to Level 6 (bachelor's level) and Level 7 (master's level).
03What is a BTEC Level 3 National equivalent to?
It depends on the size. A Level 3 National Extended Certificate (360 guided learning hours) is about one A level, the Diploma (720 GLH) about two, and the Extended Diploma (1080 GLH) about three A levels.
04Who awards BTEC qualifications?
Pearson Education Limited. Colleges and schools that deliver BTECs are Pearson-approved centres, and they set and mark most assignments using Pearson-approved briefs, with Pearson checking standards.
05Are BTECs being replaced by V Levels?
Gradually. The Post-16 Education and Skills White Paper (October 2025) introduced V Levels, launching in selected subjects from 2027. Many overlapping BTEC Level 3 diplomas lose 16–19 funding from 2027 or 2028, but if you start a BTEC National in September 2026 you can still complete it.
06Is a BTEC recognised outside the UK?
Yes. Pearson delivers BTEC International qualifications and Higher Nationals through approved centres in many countries, and UK universities accept BTECs for entry. Check the specific entry requirements of the course or employer you are applying to.
07What are the new BTEC AAQs?
AAQs (Alternative Academic Qualifications) are reformed BTEC Nationals in England. For example, the Health and Social Care AAQ Extended Certificate (360 GLH) started teaching in September 2025, with its first external assessment in 2026. AAQs include more external assessment than the 2016 Nationals.
08How long does a BTEC Level 3 National course take?
Most full-time Level 3 Nationals take two years. Smaller sizes, such as the Extended Certificate, are often studied alongside A levels over the same two years.
09Can adults study a BTEC?
Yes. Many adults study Level 3 BTECs, HNCs and HNDs at college, often part-time or through distance learning alongside work.

Grades & UCAS points

Help with grades and UCAS points

01How are BTEC assignments graded?
Each unit is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. Criteria are labelled P, M and D (for example P1, M1, D1, or A.P1 when grouped by learning aim). You must meet every Pass criterion before Merit or Distinction can be awarded.
02What is the difference between a Merit and a Distinction?
The command verb usually tells you. Pass criteria ask you to describe, explain or identify; Merit asks you to analyse, compare or discuss; Distinction asks you to evaluate, justify or critically assess, reaching a supported judgement.
03What does D star mean in BTEC?
D* (Distinction star) is the top overall grade for Level 3 Nationals. It is awarded on the overall qualification based on your unit results, not on a single assignment.
04How many UCAS points is a BTEC Extended Diploma worth?
A Level 3 National Extended Diploma at D*D*D* is worth 168 UCAS points, the same as A*A*A* at A level. A Diploma at D*D* is 112 points and an Extended Certificate at D* is 56 points.
05Can you get A grades in a BTEC?
No. BTECs never use A to E or percentages for units. Grades are Pass, Merit and Distinction (and D* overall at Level 3). Higher Nationals add Referral if a pass criterion is not met.
06What is a Referral grade on an HNC or HND?
A Referral (R) means at least one Pass criterion has not been met yet. Under Pearson's Higher Nationals rules you can have the assignment reassessed once, and the grade for reassessed work is capped at Pass. Your centre sets the deadline through its resubmission policy.
07Why did I only get a Pass when I wrote a lot?
Length does not earn higher grades; meeting the wording of the criterion does. If an M or D criterion asks you to evaluate, your work needs a weighed judgement with evidence, not more description. Our assignment review service can show you where the gap is.
08How is the overall BTEC Level 3 National grade worked out?
Each unit result converts to points, weighted by unit size, and the total points decide the overall grade from Pass to D*. Your centre or the specification shows the exact thresholds.
09Do external units affect my overall BTEC grade?
Yes. Externally assessed units count towards your total points like internal units, so preparing for them matters as much as coursework.

HNC & HND

Guidance for HNC and HND learners

01HNC or HND: which one should I choose?
An HNC is a Level 4 qualification worth 120 credits, usually one year full-time or two years part-time. An HND is a Level 5 qualification worth 240 credits, normally two years full-time, and includes the Level 4 year.
02Is an HNC a Level 3 qualification?
No. An HNC is Level 4, the same level as the first year of a bachelor's degree. An HND is Level 5, the same level as the second year.
03Can I top up an HND to a degree?
Often, yes. Many UK universities offer a one-year top-up into the final year of a bachelor's degree for HND holders. Entry requirements and grades needed vary by university. Our Level 6 help supports learners on top-up routes.
04What is an HTQ?
A Higher Technical Qualification is a Level 4 or 5 qualification approved against employer-led standards in England. The Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Engineering for England (first teaching September 2024) are approved HTQs and can be funded through Student Finance England.
05Can I join an HND straight into Level 5?
Some centres allow direct entry into the second year if you hold an HNC or relevant credits. If you start at Level 5 without the Level 4 year, expect a jump in research and critical writing; see our HND help page for what direct entrants usually find hardest.
06What is the Pearson-set unit in a Higher National?
Higher Nationals include units assessed through a theme that Pearson sets and updates, and your centre builds the brief around it. Examples are Unit 6 Managing a Successful Business Project in HN Business, and Unit 4004 Managing a Professional Engineering Project and Unit 5002 Professional Engineering Management in the 2024 HN Engineering suite.
07Will the Lifelong Learning Entitlement fund an HNC or HND?
Possibly. Student Finance England is taking LLE applications from autumn 2026 for courses and modules starting on or after 1 January 2027. The LLE is worth up to £39,160 (at 2026–27 fee levels) and can fund full courses or individual modules at Levels 4 to 6, which can include HNCs, HNDs and HTQs. Check your course and eligibility with Student Finance England.
08How many units are in an HNC?
An HNC is made up of units worth 120 credits in total, usually eight units of 15 credits, including core and optional units set by your centre.
09Can I study an HNC online?
Yes. Several providers offer HNCs by distance learning. Our international and online support covers learners studying this way.

Briefs & criteria

Stuck on a brief or its criteria?

01How do I read a BTEC assignment brief?
Start with the assessment criteria, not the scenario. List every P, M and D criterion, underline the command verb in each, then match each task in the brief to the criteria it evidences. That list becomes your plan.
02What are learning outcomes and assessment criteria?
On Higher Nationals, learning outcomes (LO1, LO2…) state what you must be able to do, and assessment criteria (P1, M1, D1…) set the standard for each grade. Level 3 Nationals use learning aims (A, B, C) in the same way.
03How long should a BTEC assignment be?
Pearson does not set one word count for every unit; your brief or centre usually gives guidance. As a rough guide, many Level 3 assignments fall around 1,500–3,000 words and HN assignments around 3,000–4,500, but evidence for each criterion matters more than length.
04Can I use the same organisation for different units?
Usually yes, and it can save research time, but check the brief. Some centres ask for a different organisation in each unit, and each unit still needs its own analysis.
05What counts as evidence in a BTEC assignment?
Written reports, presentations with speaker notes, observation records, witness statements, practical results, code with testing logs and reflective accounts can all be evidence, depending on what the brief specifies.
06What if my brief does not make sense?
Ask your assessor first; they are expected to clarify briefs. You can also send it to us, and a tutor will break it into criteria and explain what each task is asking for.
07What does a command verb tell me?
It tells you the depth needed. Describe and explain sit at Pass, analyse and compare at Merit, and evaluate and justify at Distinction.
08Should I answer each criterion in a separate section?
Signposting each criterion with a heading or label makes it easier for your assessor to find the evidence, so most tutors recommend it.

Research & referencing

Tips for research and Harvard referencing

01Which referencing style do BTEC assignments use?
Most UK centres use Harvard referencing. Check your centre's guide, because small details like punctuation, italics and how websites are cited vary between versions.
02How many references should a BTEC assignment have?
There is no official number. As a guide, Level 3 work often uses 5–10 credible sources and HN work 10–20, including textbooks, journal articles, government data and company reports.
03How do I reference a website in Harvard style?
Include the author or organisation, year, page title in italics, the words 'Available at:' with the URL, and the date you accessed it. Cite it in the text as (Author, year).
04Can I use Wikipedia in a BTEC assignment?
Use it to find sources, not as a source. Follow its references to the original articles, reports or books, and cite those instead.
05Who can check my referencing before I submit?
Our referencing check service compares every in-text citation with your reference list and flags missing, mismatched or incorrectly formatted entries.
06What is the difference between a reference list and a bibliography?
A reference list includes only sources you cite in your work; a bibliography also lists sources you read but did not cite. Most BTEC centres ask for a reference list.
07How do I cite a lecture or class notes?
Check your centre's guide. Many centres prefer you to cite the original source the lecturer used rather than the notes themselves.

Resubmissions & referrals

Advice after a referral or resubmission

01Can I resubmit a BTEC assignment?
Usually you are allowed one resubmission per assignment, if you met the original deadline, signed the authenticity statement and your assessor agrees you can improve the evidence without further guidance. Your centre's policy sets the exact deadline.
02Is a resubmitted assignment capped at a Pass?
It depends on the qualification. On BTEC Nationals (Levels 1–3), Pearson's guidance keeps all criteria available on a resubmission, but a retake after that is limited to the Pass criteria. On HNCs and HNDs, reassessed work is capped at Pass. Ask your assessor to confirm how your centre applies this.
03How do I fix an assignment after a referral?
Read the feedback against each criterion, list exactly what evidence is missing and fix those gaps first. Avoid rewriting everything. A tutor can help you plan a resubmission that targets the referred criteria.
04How long do I have to resubmit?
For BTEC Nationals, Pearson's guidance is within 15 working days of receiving your feedback, in term time and in the same academic year. On HNCs and HNDs the window is set by your centre. Check the date on your feedback sheet.
05Can someone help me understand my assessor's feedback?
Yes. Send the feedback and your original submission. A tutor will explain which criteria were not met and show the kind of evidence that would meet them.
06What is the difference between a resubmission and a retake?
A resubmission improves the same piece of work after feedback. A retake is a new assignment for the same unit, usually only allowed once and capped at Pass.
07Can I resubmit if I missed the deadline?
Usually not without an approved extension or mitigating circumstances. Speak to your assessor as early as possible.

AI & academic integrity

Asking about AI rules and academic integrity?

01Is using a tutor for BTEC coursework allowed in the UK?
Yes, when the help is guidance, tutoring, feedback, model answers for reference and proofreading. In England, the Skills and Post-16 Education Act 2022 makes it an offence to provide or advertise a service that completes assignments for post-16 learners to submit as their own.
02Can I use ChatGPT for my BTEC assignment?
Only within your centre's rules. JCQ guidance on AI use in assessments (updated April 2025) applies to BTECs: your submitted work must be in your own words, any AI use must be acknowledged, and unacknowledged AI use counts as malpractice.
03What happens if my college thinks I used AI?
Your centre will investigate under its malpractice policy, which can include asking you to explain your work. Sanctions under JCQ rules range up to disqualification, so keep drafts and notes that show how your work developed.
04How should I use a model answer properly?
Read it to understand structure, depth and how criteria are evidenced, then close it and write your own work using your own research and organisation. Never copy or paraphrase it into your submission.
05Do your tutors use AI to write?
No. Our tutors write every model answer themselves and every order includes an originality report. We also never offer to get work past plagiarism or AI checks.
06Is it plagiarism to use a model answer?
Reading a model answer to understand the standard is not plagiarism. Copying or closely paraphrasing it into your submission is.
07How do I acknowledge AI use in a BTEC assignment?
Follow your centre's policy. JCQ guidance expects you to name the tool, explain how you used it and keep a record of prompts and outputs where required.

Ordering & prices

Plan your order: prices, discounts and deadlines

01How much does BTEC assignment help cost?
Prices start from £69 for a short report of 1,000–1,500 words with seven or more days' notice. The price depends on length, complexity and deadline; you get a fixed quote before paying.
02Are there any discounts?
Yes: 25% off your first order, 20% off when you order help with three or more units together, and a 15% referral discount when a friend orders.
03How fast can you help with a BTEC assignment?
Deadlines from 12 hours are possible for shorter tasks, but a week or more gives the tutor time to plan with you and keeps the price lower.
04How do I place an order?
Use the order form or WhatsApp. Upload the brief, choose your deadline and tell us the criteria you are aiming for. You will receive a plan and a price before paying.
05Can I pay in instalments?
For larger projects such as an HND research project or a dissertation, ask your coordinator whether the work can be split into stages, each with its own quote.
06Do you charge for revisions?
No. Free revisions are included within the agreed scope of your order.
07What do I need to send to get a quote?
The brief, the unit, the grade you are aiming for, the word count and your deadline. Assessor feedback helps for resubmissions.
08Is my payment information safe?
Payments are taken by card through a secure checkout; we never ask for card details on WhatsApp or by email.

Online & international

Studying online or abroad? Get support here

01Can I get BTEC help if I study outside the UK?
Yes. We support learners at Pearson centres abroad and on online or distance-learning courses. See international and online support.
02Which countries do you support?
Anywhere Pearson qualifications are delivered, including Pakistan, the UAE, Nigeria and Jordan, as well as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. Prices stay in GBP and replies are planned around your time zone.
03Is a BTEC International different from a UK BTEC?
BTEC International qualifications use specifications written for centres outside England, so unit numbers, content and assessment can differ from the UK version. Always send the brief from your own centre.
04Can I pay in my local currency?
Prices are in GBP. You can pay by card, and your bank converts the amount into your currency.
05How do time zones work for deadlines?
Tell us your deadline in your local time and we plan delivery to arrive before it. WhatsApp support runs 24/7, so you can message in your own day.
06Do you support BTEC learners studying in English as a second language?
Yes. Tutors explain criteria in plain English and show how to structure answers, which many learners writing in their second language find most useful.
07Can I get help with a Pearson HND from outside the UK?
Yes. We support Pearson BTEC Higher National learners at approved centres abroad and on online programmes.
