Where referencing goes wrong

Struggling With Referencing Marks or a High Similarity Score?

Referencing feels like admin until it costs you a grade. These are the problems we see most often in BTEC and Higher National drafts.

Why referencing marks quietly slip

Few criteria say “reference correctly”, yet assessors judge whether your evidence is credible and properly attributed. Sloppy citations make good analysis look borrowed, and repeated slips can trigger a malpractice conversation.

“I put every website I used at the bottom. Apparently that isn't referencing.” An HNC learner after her first Referral.

What a similarity percentage actually means

Turnitin's own guidance says its report highlights matching text and that plagiarism cannot be decided by the score alone. Correctly quoted passages and your reference list can match too, depending on your centre's settings.

Which in-text slips assessors notice first

Initials inside brackets, missing page numbers on quotations, “et al.” used for two authors, or a website cited by its URL. Each one is small; a page full of them looks careless.

How citations and the list drift apart

You cite Smith (2022) in the text, but the list says Smith (2021). Or a source appears in the list and nowhere in the work. Mismatches like these are the most common referencing feedback we see.

When secondary referencing goes wrong

You quote Maslow from your textbook and list Maslow's 1943 paper, which you never read. Cite Them Right asks you to say “cited in” and list only the source you actually used.

Why source quality is judged too

Undated blogs, essay sites and anonymous web pages weaken an argument even when cited perfectly. At Level 4 and above, assessors expect books, journals and official sources such as gov.uk, NHS or HSE.

Why AI-made reference lists are risky

Chatbots can produce references that look real but cannot be traced, and JCQ's April 2025 guidance treats unacknowledged AI use as malpractice. If your centre allows AI, Cite Them Right now has a pattern for acknowledging it. We check that every source exists.

Styles we check

Which Referencing Style Do You Need Checked?

Your centre's handbook decides the style, and most BTEC courses use Harvard. We work to whatever your college specifies, including its own house variation.

What Cite Them Right Harvard expects

Author-date citations in round brackets, such as (Jones and Henry, 2011, p. 1150). Up to three authors are named in the text; four or more become the first author plus et al. The list follows your centre's rule on et al., alphabetically.

  • “Available at:” and “(Accessed:)” for online sources

How college Harvard versions differ

Many centres publish their own Harvard guide with small changes to punctuation, italics or date placement. Send us yours and we follow it exactly rather than imposing a different version.

  • Your handbook beats any generic rule

Where APA 7 is used

Common in psychology, health and some care programmes. Two authors take “&” inside brackets, three or more become et al. from the first citation, and DOIs are written as full https://doi.org/ links.

  • Hanging indent and sentence-case titles

Who needs OSCOLA

Law units, for example HND Business Unit 7: Business Law or Applied Law units on dispute solving, where centres ask for legal citation. OSCOLA uses footnotes and minimal punctuation, as in Donoghue v Stevenson [1932] AC 562 (HL).

  • Fifth edition now current

Why generator output still needs checking

Word's built-in tool, Zotero or an online generator can save time, but they copy errors from the metadata: capitalised titles, missing editors, wrong years. We check what the tool produced against the real source.

  • Tool errors corrected

Which figures, tables and data need citing

Charts from ONS, tables adapted from a textbook and images from websites all need a source line and a list entry. Legislation such as the Care Act 2014 or the Equality Act 2010 is cited by its title and year.

  • Captions with sources

Which style is yours if nobody told you?

Check the assignment brief, the unit handbook or your VLE first. If it is still unclear, ask your tutor; it is a fair question and they can answer it.

A photo of the brief is enough. A tutor breaks the tasks into plain English and confirms a fixed price, and the team is online 24/7.

How it works

How Our Referencing Check Works, From Upload to Fixed List

A proper check is slow, careful work: matching, tracing and formatting every source. Here is what happens to your draft.

  1. 1

    What to send us

Your draft as an editable file, your centre's referencing guide and, if you have one, the similarity report from your college's checker.

    • Free first look
  2. 2

    How every citation is matched

Each in-text citation is ticked against the list: author spelling, year, page number and order. Orphans on either side are flagged.

    • Two-way match
  3. 3

    How sources are traced

We confirm each source exists and that the details are right: edition, publisher, journal volume, DOI or URL and access date. Untraceable sources are flagged for you to replace.

    • Real sources only
  4. 4

    What you receive back

A marked-up copy with comments, a corrected example of each pattern you got wrong and a short summary of the rules you broke most often. You apply the corrections yourself.

Levels and subjects

Referencing Guidance at Every Level, From Level 2 to Level 7

Expectations rise sharply between levels. A Level 2 source list and an HND literature review are judged very differently, so we check against what your level demands. Online learners and those at Pearson centres abroad can use the same service.

What Level 2 learners need to get right

A simple, consistent source list and a habit of saying where information came from. Building that habit early makes Level 3 far easier. More on our Level 2 coursework support.

Typical source issues

  • Websites listed as bare links
  • No dates on sources
  • Copied definitions

How Level 3 Nationals raise the bar

Harvard in-text citations become the norm, with real company reports, legislation and official guidance. Care learners on Health and Social Care units cite a lot of law and policy.

Typical source issues

  • Legislation cited inconsistently
  • Company websites over-used
  • Missing page numbers

Why HNC and HND work is checked harder

At Levels 4 and 5, assessors expect academic books and journals, accurate secondary referencing and a literature review that engages with sources. See our HNC unit support.

Typical source issues

  • Secondary sources cited as primary
  • Too few academic sources
  • Research Project literature gaps

Which standards apply at Level 6 and Level 7

Professional diplomas at bachelor's and master's level demand current, peer-reviewed sources and critical use of literature. We check depth as well as format.

Typical source issues

  • Dated management theory
  • Uncritical source use
  • DOIs missing

What's included

What Our Citation Check Support Includes

You come away with a corrected understanding, not just a corrected list. Every check covers the following.

How in-text and list are reconciled

Every citation is matched to an entry and every entry to a citation. Year, spelling and page mismatches are marked where they occur.

Why each source is traced

We confirm the source exists and that the edition, journal or URL details are accurate. Anything untraceable is flagged so you can swap it out.

How your similarity report is read

We go through the highlighted matches with you, separating harmless ones, such as correctly quoted text, from passages that need rewording or a citation.

Where paraphrase is too close

Sentences that keep the original structure with a few words swapped are marked, with a note on how to rewrite in your own voice and cite properly.

Which sources to upgrade

Weak sources are flagged with the kind of stronger evidence to look for, such as a journal article, an official report or a current textbook.

What the rule summary covers

A one-page list of the rules you broke most often, with correct examples in your style. Keep it for every assignment that follows.

Plan and price in one reply

Why not check the whole draft against the criteria?

Referencing is only one part of the grade. Our pre-submission draft review checks every P, M and D criterion as well.

Before and after

How a Referencing Fix Rescued an HND Business Law Report

A realistic example of what a citation check uncovers. The details are drawn from common cases, not one learner's file.

  1. 1

    What triggered the panic

His practice upload came back with a similarity figure he had never seen before. His tutor's comment on an earlier unit had also said “referencing inconsistent”. He assumed he was in serious trouble.

  2. 2

    What the check actually found

Much of the match was harmless: his reference list and two properly quoted sections of the Consumer Rights Act 2015. The real problems were one paragraph paraphrased too closely from a law firm's blog and five citations missing from his list.

  3. 3

Where secondary referencing tripped him up

He had listed a famous negligence case he only met in his textbook. The tutor showed him how to cite it as found in the textbook and list the book, which was the source he really used.

  4. How Tomasz put it right

He rewrote the blog-based paragraph in his own words using his lecture notes, fixed the list and replaced two undated web pages with legislation.gov.uk. He achieved a Merit, and his assessor noted the accurate referencing.

A frightening number often hides a small, fixable set of problems. Knowing which matches matter is half the battle.

FAQs

Referencing Check FAQs: Ask Us Before You Submit

01Is it allowed to get someone to check my references?
Yes. Checking citations and explaining referencing rules is normal study support, much like a library skills session. We mark up problems and show correct examples; you make the corrections. The work you submit must still be your own, written in line with your centre's academic-integrity and AI policy.
02What is a good Turnitin similarity score for a BTEC assignment?
There is no universal safe number. Turnitin says plagiarism cannot be judged from the score alone, and centres read the report in context. A low score can still hide copied work, and a higher one may simply reflect quotations and your reference list. What matters is whether each match is properly quoted and cited.
03Why is my similarity score high when I referenced everything?
Correctly quoted passages, your reference list, common phrases and legislation titles can all match other documents. Whether they count depends on your centre's filter settings, which can exclude quotes and bibliographies. Close paraphrasing is the usual real problem: sentences that keep the original structure with a few words changed.
04Can you lower my Turnitin score for me?
We don't edit text to chase a number, and no honest service can promise a particular score. What we do is show you which matches are a concern and why, so you can quote properly, add missing citations or rewrite close paraphrases in your own words. A lower score usually follows, because the work is genuinely better attributed.
05Which referencing style does BTEC use?
Your centre decides, and most BTEC courses use Harvard, often Cite Them Right or a college version of it. Some health and psychology programmes prefer APA 7, and law units may ask for OSCOLA. Check your brief or handbook, and send us your college guide so we follow it exactly.
06How do I reference a source I found quoted in another book?
That is secondary referencing. In Cite Them Right Harvard, name the original author and say where you found it, such as (Maslow, 1943, cited in Smith, 2021, p. 45). Only Smith goes in your reference list, because that is what you read. APA 7 uses “as cited in” in the same way.
07When should I use et al. in Harvard referencing?
In Cite Them Right Harvard, name up to three authors in your in-text citation and use the first author plus et al. for four or more. In the reference list, follow your centre's rule: Cite Them Right allows et al. for four or more authors, but many colleges ask you to list every author. APA 7 differs: et al. starts at three authors. Using it too early is one of the most common Harvard mistakes.
08Do I need page numbers in Harvard in-text citations?
Yes, when you quote directly or draw on an idea from a specific page, for example (Jones and Henry, 2011, p. 1150). For a general reference to a whole book or article, the author and year are enough. Missing page numbers on quotations are among the slips assessors spot first.
09How do law students reference cases in OSCOLA?
OSCOLA uses footnotes rather than brackets and keeps punctuation to a minimum. A case is cited by name in italics, then year and law report, as in Donoghue v Stevenson [1932] AC 562 (HL). The fifth edition is now current and removes “ibid”, so check which edition your centre expects.
10Can you check references made by a generator or an AI tool?
Yes, and it is worth doing. Generators copy errors from source metadata, and AI chatbots can produce references to works that cannot be found. We trace every entry. If a source cannot be verified, we tell you so you can replace it with one you have actually read.
11Will you contact my college about the check?
No. We never contact your centre, and your files are never shared or stored in any public database. Because you make every correction yourself, the finished work remains yours. If your tutor asks how you improved your referencing, you can say you had independent feedback.
