This Unit 20 Organisational Behaviour Management brief places learners in a retail graduate training programme built around three Master Classes. Section A is a reflective portfolio on personality audits, a group motivation activity and a reflective presentation; Section B is an academic poster on how power, politics and culture shape employee behaviour, sales and customer service.

Unit Learning Outcomes

  • LO1 Reflect on own personality and perceptions to understand how individual difference informs and influences management approaches.
  • LO2 Apply content and process theories of motivation to create and maintain an effective workforce.
  • LO3 Participate in a group team activity for a given business situation to demonstrate effective team skills.
  • LO4 Examine how power, politics and culture can be used to influence employee behaviour and accomplish organisational goals.

Vocational Scenario

The organisation is a Sri Lankan-based retailer with stores in several countries, offering the latest fashion, beauty and homeware at low prices with a large own-brand range. As a Graduate Trainee Store Manager you lead, motivate and develop the store team to deliver standards, customer service and product knowledge, maximise sales and profitability, and follow visual merchandising guidelines. The company’s ‘Master Class’ training sessions, led by the Executive Team, include individual and group activities that you record and reflect on.

Section A: Portfolio (LO1, LO2, LO3)

Master Class 1: Personality and Perceptions (LO1)

  • Complete a personality and attribute evaluation that audits your skills and personality traits, and discuss whether they are positive or negative for management approaches.
  • Reflect on personality and perceptions of self in terms of your own performance.

Master Class 2: Motivation (LO2)

Shop-floor staff show low morale, lack of focus and low productivity: they work long, often isolated shifts with repetitive tasks and challenging customers. In a small group, prepare, produce and deliver a short, dynamic motivational activity for the rest of the management team that applies content and process theories of motivation. Participate fully, then discuss the outcome with your peers to critically assess how successful the theories were in practice.

Master Class 3: Reflection (LO3)

Present the outcome of your audits and your participation in the group activity, supported by literature and business examples, covering:

  • Team and group behaviour and its relevance to an effective team.
  • The audit results, your participation and the importance of personality in an effective workforce and managerial relationships.
  • A challenge to your own perspectives, traits and attributes and your individual contribution to the group.
  • Justified adaptation of yourself and business managers to create an effective team and a motivated workforce.

Section B: Academic Poster (LO4)

Central office is concerned that organisational power and politics are harming the culture of the business and stopping some stores from meeting their goals. Investigate how power, politics and culture influence employee behaviour, customer satisfaction and sales, using a variety of organisational examples, and present your findings as an academic poster at the next Master Class. Recommend how power, politics and culture could guide behaviour to achieve sales targets, improve customer interaction and strengthen visual merchandising and stock presentation. Consider:

  • Different perspectives of power.
  • The occurrence of organisational politics.
  • Levels of culture and how national culture influences management and employee behaviour.
  • The combined effect of power, politics and culture on behaviour and organisational goals.

The Unit 20 Organisational Behaviour Management portfolio is graded on reflection backed by theory. In Section A your personality audit (for example Big Five or MBTI) has to be linked to real management approaches in a busy retail store, the motivation activity should visibly apply both content theories such as Maslow or Herzberg and process theories such as Vroom or Adams, and your reflection should use Tuckman or Belbin to judge your own team contribution. The Section B poster then needs French and Raven's power bases, organisational politics and Hofstede or Schein on culture, tied to sales, customer service and merchandising goals.
