This September 2026 Unit 1 brief casts the learner as a Business Strategy Assistant at Nexus Business Solutions Ltd, a UK consultancy helping organisations respond to sustainability, innovation and market change. Learners profile a public, a private and a voluntary sector organisation, then write a formal report on how internal strengths and weaknesses interact with the macro environment.

Unit Learning Outcomes

  • LO1 Explain the different types, purposes and structures of organisations.
  • LO2 Explain the relationship between different organisational functions and how they link to organisational objectives and structure.
  • LO3 Explore the positive and negative impact the macro environment has on business operations.
  • LO4 Analyse the internal strengths and weaknesses of organisations and how they interrelate with external macro factors.

Activity 1: Portfolio of Three Different Businesses

As part of your induction, prepare a portfolio of three organisations active in sustainability, clean growth, responsible operations or social value, one from each sector:

  • Public sector: government-run organisations providing public services, for example the UK Environment Agency, National Grid ESO or DEFRA.
  • Private sector: profit-making businesses, for example Amazon, Tesla or Innocent Drinks.
  • Voluntary sector: non-profit organisations and charities, for example Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth or WWF UK.

For each organisation, include:

  1. Type, purpose and legal structure.
  2. Size and scope, including its products or services.
  3. Analysis of how structure, size and scope link to business objectives and products or services.
  4. Discussion of the relationship between organisational functions and how they work together to support objectives and structure.
  5. Analysis of the interrelationships between those functions and their impact on organisational structure.

Conclude by critically analysing the complexities of these organisations and their structures, considering internal and external influences. Present all three profiles in one professionally formatted Word document of about 2,500 to 3,000 words.

Activity 2: Formal Report on the Business Environment

An overseas organisation considering entry into the UK market has asked the consultancy for an evidence-based report on how a UK-based organisation operates within a changing business environment. Select one UK-based organisation from any sector and:

  • Identify three positive and three negative impacts the macro environment has had on it, using current examples.
  • Carry out internal (SWOT) and external (PESTLE) analysis of two organisations, adding a second organisation for comparison, to identify strengths and weaknesses.
  • Explain how the strengths and weaknesses interrelate with external macro factors.
  • Apply SWOT or TOWS analysis and justify how it supports decision-making.
  • Conclude with a critical evaluation of the overall impact of macro and micro environmental factors on business objectives and decision-making, using contemporary examples and credible sources.

Key Vocabulary in the Brief

The brief defines terms learners are expected to use, including economy, span of control, sustainability, scope, chain of command, transnational, international and global business, franchising, transformational systems, income elasticity of demand, market share and macro environment.

This Unit 1 Contemporary Business Environment assignment rewards analysis over description. In Activity 1 each sector profile should connect legal structure, size and scope to objectives, then show how functions such as operations, finance, marketing and HR interrelate and shape the structure. Activity 2 needs current examples of three positive and three negative macro impacts, a PESTLE and SWOT for two UK organisations, and a TOWS matrix that clearly drives the recommendations for the overseas client. Our HNC business assignment help can guide you on structure, criteria and Harvard referencing, and you can ask for an assignment review before submission.
