You are a trainee data analyst at a company that imports speciality cheeses from France and the Netherlands and sells them to UK restaurants and delicatessens. The company buys in euros and sells in pounds, so exchange rate movements and changes in economic growth hit its profit. You must build a spreadsheet model that predicts the effect of exchange rate changes on profit margins.

  • The UK sales price uses a typical margin of 40%, and profit is the sales price minus the cost per kilo in pounds.
  • Each 10p rise in sales price cuts average monthly sales by 20 units, and each 10p fall adds 20 units.
  • When the exchange rate rises, the company can either cut the margin to hold prices or keep the margin and raise prices, which lowers sales volume. The model must show the profit impact of both options.
  • The model is for non-expert users, so it needs a user interface where the user enters the exchange rate and adjusts the margin.

Task 1

  • Produce a design for the data model, including worksheet structure diagrams, a test plan and alternative designs, for example for the user interface.
  • Review the design with at least two people, record their feedback and use it to improve the design.
  • Justify your design decisions and explain how you reached the final design.
  • Develop the model from the final design and test it against your test plan.
  • Demonstrate the model to a user, collect feedback and use it, with your test results, to refine and optimise the model.
  • Evaluate the design and the final optimised model against the client’s requirements.
  • Show individual responsibility, time management and well-justified recommendations and decisions throughout.
