Where referencing goes wrong
Referencing feels like admin until it costs you a grade. These are the problems we see most often in BTEC and Higher National drafts.
Few criteria say “reference correctly”, yet assessors judge whether your evidence is credible and properly attributed. Sloppy citations make good analysis look borrowed, and repeated slips can trigger a malpractice conversation.
“I put every website I used at the bottom. Apparently that isn't referencing.” An HNC learner after her first Referral.
Turnitin's own guidance says its report highlights matching text and that plagiarism cannot be decided by the score alone. Correctly quoted passages and your reference list can match too, depending on your centre's settings.
Initials inside brackets, missing page numbers on quotations, “et al.” used for two authors, or a website cited by its URL. Each one is small; a page full of them looks careless.
You cite Smith (2022) in the text, but the list says Smith (2021). Or a source appears in the list and nowhere in the work. Mismatches like these are the most common referencing feedback we see.
You quote Maslow from your textbook and list Maslow's 1943 paper, which you never read. Cite Them Right asks you to say “cited in” and list only the source you actually used.
Undated blogs, essay sites and anonymous web pages weaken an argument even when cited perfectly. At Level 4 and above, assessors expect books, journals and official sources such as gov.uk, NHS or HSE.
Chatbots can produce references that look real but cannot be traced, and JCQ's April 2025 guidance treats unacknowledged AI use as malpractice. If your centre allows AI, Cite Them Right now has a pattern for acknowledging it. We check that every source exists.

Your centre's handbook decides the style, and most BTEC courses use Harvard. We work to whatever your college specifies, including its own house variation.
Author-date citations in round brackets, such as (Jones and Henry, 2011, p. 1150). Up to three authors are named in the text; four or more become the first author plus et al. The list follows your centre's rule on et al., alphabetically.
Many centres publish their own Harvard guide with small changes to punctuation, italics or date placement. Send us yours and we follow it exactly rather than imposing a different version.
Common in psychology, health and some care programmes. Two authors take “&” inside brackets, three or more become et al. from the first citation, and DOIs are written as full https://doi.org/ links.
Law units, for example HND Business Unit 7: Business Law or Applied Law units on dispute solving, where centres ask for legal citation. OSCOLA uses footnotes and minimal punctuation, as in Donoghue v Stevenson [1932] AC 562 (HL).
Word's built-in tool, Zotero or an online generator can save time, but they copy errors from the metadata: capitalised titles, missing editors, wrong years. We check what the tool produced against the real source.
Charts from ONS, tables adapted from a textbook and images from websites all need a source line and a list entry. Legislation such as the Care Act 2014 or the Equality Act 2010 is cited by its title and year.
Check the assignment brief, the unit handbook or your VLE first. If it is still unclear, ask your tutor; it is a fair question and they can answer it.

A realistic example of what a citation check uncovers. The details are drawn from common cases, not one learner's file.
His practice upload came back with a similarity figure he had never seen before. His tutor's comment on an earlier unit had also said “referencing inconsistent”. He assumed he was in serious trouble.
Much of the match was harmless: his reference list and two properly quoted sections of the Consumer Rights Act 2015. The real problems were one paragraph paraphrased too closely from a law firm's blog and five citations missing from his list.
He had listed a famous negligence case he only met in his textbook. The tutor showed him how to cite it as found in the textbook and list the book, which was the source he really used.
He rewrote the blog-based paragraph in his own words using his lecture notes, fixed the list and replaced two undated web pages with legislation.gov.uk. He achieved a Merit, and his assessor noted the accurate referencing.
A frightening number often hides a small, fixable set of problems. Knowing which matches matter is half the battle.
